Bute & Argyll: A Landscape Stitched with Story

Argyll is where land and legend blend seamlessly—where sea lochs bite into green hills and ancient forests rustle with the weight of centuries. It’s a land of layered beauty: tidal shores and crumbling castles, mirror-calm waters beside rising woodland. There’s an almost mythic texture to Argyll—a richness of story, of shadow and light—that lends itself naturally to the rhythm of knit.
This coming season, I've immersed ourselves in Argyll & Bute's palette and patterns. The wool we’ve chosen will carry the tones of this landscape; the stitches echo its rhythm. These pieces will be as much a part of Argyll as the mist that rolls down Loch Awe or the peat that burns slow and sweet in hearths across the region.
Textures of a Timeless Land
What strikes us about Argyll & Bute is how much of it feels untouched. Walking the paths along Loch Fyne or through the woods, you're surrounded by texture: the spongy green of moss underfoot, the rough bark of ancient oaks, the shimmer of loch water caught in rare sunlight.
We’re bringing this richness into our knits through layered structures— stitches for forest floors, twisted cables for gnarled roots, and airy openwork to mimic the constant play of fog and light. Every garment will hold a piece of the place.
The hues we’ve selected range from earthy browns and weathered greys to sea-glass green and soft heathery lilac. These aren’t flat colours—they shift subtly with the light, much like the landscape itself.
Nature’s Quiet Drama
On Bute, the drama of nature is never ostentatious. It’s in the slow bend of a river, the sudden appearance of a stag on a ridge, the soft sound of rain on leaves. We design with that same sense of restraint and detail. Nothing is overworked. Everything has purpose.
Even our yarn speaks this language. We use British wool spun to retain its integrity—slightly rustic to the touch, but full of character. Some of our Argyll-inspired pieces will feature hand-dyed accents—colours drawn directly from a forager’s view: bilberry blue, bramble purple, lichen green.
Threads of History
Argyll is stitched through with history. You can feel it in the air on the windswept trails that trace the coastline. There’s something deeply grounding in knowing that the land underfoot has carried generations before us.
That sense of continuity lives in our work. Our stitches echo motifs found in Celtic stone carvings, traditional gansey patterns worn by coastal fishermen, and the quiet geometry of nature itself. It’s our way of honouring the past while creating something distinctly contemporary.
A Return to What Matters
To wear wool is to return—to comfort, to simplicity, to something real. In every piece, there is care. There is place. There is the calm of a loch before dawn, the steady strength of a forest, the hush of a hill wrapped in fog.
At Detta Knitwear, we don’t chase trends. We chase meaning. And in Argyll & Bute, we found it—layered in the land, shaped by the sea, and carried forward, stitch by stitch, into something you can hold close. I'm so excited to bring you the Argyll & Bute collection this autumn.
